Irish girls first, boys second at Freeman Holiday tourney

Maggie Goltz scored 17 points and Ashli Jordan added 12 to lift the Falls City Sacred Heart Lady Irish over Freeman, 47-29, Monday in the championship of the Freeman Holiday tournament at Adams.

Goltz also had a big night during Saturday’s 66-25 win over Thayer Central, as she led all scorers with 18 points. Junior Abby Magdanz also reached double figures with 11 points, while sister Elizabeth added nine and freshmen Jade Hill and Haylee Heits each scored eight.

The top-ranked Lady Irish remain undefeated at 8-0 and host Elmwood-Murdock (4-5) Friday night. The varsity girls game tips off immediately after the boys junior varsity game, which begins at 4:30.


FCSH — Jordan 12, A. Magdanz 2, Schock 1, E. Magdanz 6, Goltz 17, Hill 1, Heits 8.

Freeman — Parde 2, Meyer 2, Dorn 3, Rapp 6, Mason 5, Haynes 1, Remmers 10.

On the boys’ side, Freeman’s Isaac Frerichs scored 26 points and the Falcons’ 22-to-4 advantage at the free-throw line lifted the hosts past the Irish, 51-41. Freeman finished 22-of-32 at the FT line, while Sacred Heart was just 4-for-5 at the stripe.

The Irish kept it close by knocking down seven three pointers. Colin Niemeyer finished 3-for-5 from behind the arc and led FCSH with 13 points. Senior Matt Goltz scored 12 points and grabbed seven rebounds and seniors Chaz Dunn added 10 points. 

FCSH (7-1) will look to get back on track Friday night when they host Elmwood-Murdock (3-6).
