Big second half lifts top-ranked Irish over Cougars

Falls City Sacred Heart’s Sawyer Kean rushed for career highs in yards, 288, and touchdowns, six, and propelled the top-ranked Irish into the quarterfinals of the Class D2 state playoffs.

Sacred Heart, now 10-0 for the second-straight year, defeated sixth-ranked Lyons-Decatur Northeast, 56-14, at Lyons Wednesday night and will host Humphrey St. Francis (9-1) Tuesday at 4:30 p.m. at Jug Brown Stadium. St. Francis defeated Sacred Heart 38-13 at Jug Brown last year in the semifinals and then went on to a runner-up finish, losing to Giltner in the D2 championship, 42-26.

Kean, a junior running back who entered Tuesday’s game with only 70 carries, scored on runs of 48 and 45 yards in the first half, then added TD runs of 1, 57, 9 and 3 yards in the second half, as the Irish pulled away.

L-D NE averaged more than 50 points per game during the regular season, but were shutout in the second half.
