Falls City Sacred Heart picked up a pair of victories last week but dropped the marquee rematch with Sterling and head into this week’s Pioneer Conference tournament with a 22-4 record.
Fourth-ranked Sterling defeated then fifth-ranked SH in two sets, 26-24 and 25-18 at Sterling last Tuesday night as part of a triangular with Nebraska City Lourdes. It was the second loss of the season to the Jets for the Lady Irish, who lost in two sets to Sterling at the Mudecas tournament in mid-September.
SH could face Sterling two more times and with much more on the line than in the next two weeks. Sterling (21-5) is opposite SH in this week’s Pioneer conference tournament bracket, so a potential matchup looms in the championship, should SH win their first and second round matches to advance to Friday’s championship.
They could also see each other in the sub-district final next Tuesday at Johnson-Brock.
SH faced either Diller-Odell or Lewiston last night in Pawnee City in the first round of the conference tournament. A win last night and they play tonight at 7:15 in Humboldt against either Friend (21-3) or Lourdes (10-13). The Pioneer Conference championship is Friday at 8 p.m. in Humboldt.
SH senior Emma Schock and freshman Haylee Heits combined for six aces in the loss to Sterling. Sophomore Maggie Goltz led the SH attack with seven fills.
The Lady Irish’s victories last week were against NCL (25-18, 25-16) Tuesday night and Monday night at Rock Port, MO, (25-10, 25-13).
In the win over NCL, Heits finished with 10 kills, Goltz with six kills and two blocks and junior Elizabeth Magdanz recorded 17 assists.
Heits also had a big game at Rock Port where she finished with six aces on 16-of-17 serves and added eight kills and six digs. Goltz chipped in eight kills and Elizabeth and Abby Magdanz recorded 19 assists and seven digs, respectively.
