FC Sacred Heart’s Lady Irish volleyball team got off to just the start they were looking for Saturday with a 3-0 performance and first place finish at the season-opening Weeping Water Invitational.
The Lady Irish opened in pool play with wins over East Butler (27-25, 25-21) and Sidney, IA (25-5, 25-15).
Weeping Water, playing in the other pool with wins over Lourdes Central Catholic and Conestoga to set up the final with FCSH.
FCSH cruised in the first game against WW 25-9, then put the hosts away 25-19 in the second.
Freshman Haylee Heits converted 11-of-12 serves for nine points, including five aces in the win over Weeping Water. Sophomore Maggie Goltz led the attack with 11 kills and junior Elizabeth Magdanz handed out 14 assists. Senior Libero Ashli Jordan recorded six digs.
Jordan was a perfect 9-for-9 serving against Sidney with eight points and a pair of aces. Jordan also picked up 12 digs, defensively. Fellow senior Emma Schock was also perfect against Sidney, finishing 10-for-10 with eight points and two aces. Heits led a balanced attack against Sidney with six kills, followed by Goltz with five, freshman Jade Hill with four and senior Rachel Magdanz recorded three. Magdanz had her best passing performance of the day with 22 assists.
In the day’s first match, Goltz and Heits led at the net with nine and seven kills, respectively. Magdanz recorded 13 assists, while Jordan notched 13 digs. Parrish finished 14-for-14 serving with 10 points.
FCSH, which opened the season ranked seventh by the Lincoln Journal Star and ninth by the Omaha World Herald, travels to Diller-Odell (1-3) tonight at 5:30. Saturday the Lady Irish head to the HTRS Tourney in Humboldt. Saturday’s start time is set for 9 a.m.
