New events added to Cobblestone lineup

The 2013 Falls City Cobblestone Festival is just around the corner, and it’s never too early to begin preparing for the fun-filled activities.

This year some new events have been added to the weekend’s agenda to help ensure everyone has a little extra fun. New this year will be a Friday night “beverage garden” with the band Partners N Crime providing entertainment for the crowd.

Additions to Saturday’s schedule will include a “Taste of Falls City” Taco Eating Contest, as well as a Cupcake Eating Contest, a “Falls City’s Next Top Pets” contest with both a talent division and a best costume division, and “Cobblestone’s Amazing Wheelchair Race,” an obstacle course guaranteed to entertain both the contestants and spectators.

Saturday evening a movie for all festival goers to enjoy will be shown on a giant, inflatable movie screen atop of the Cobblestone Stage. We would like everyone to visit the Falls City Chamber/Main Street Facebook Page to vote on their top pick for the evening’s movie.

Sunday’s activities will consist of a 3-on-3 basketball tournament. Divisions will be 6-8th grade, 9-12th grade, and adult. The tournament will be double elimination with co-ed teams consisting of at least three but no more than four players (one sub is allowed.) The entry fee will be $5 per player.

In addition, Cobblestone will be host to “Falls City’s Got Talent.” This contest is open to anyone or any group who wishes to display their unique talent (or lack of) while entertaining the crowd in four minutes or less. Since this is purely for fun, we encourage everyone to be creative and give it a try (lip synching is acceptable.)  All acts must be suitable for a family environment. A sound system will be available but the act is responsible for providing their own accompaniment. Prizes will be awarded and will vary from contest to contest. The entry fee for each of these contests, with the exception of the 3-on-3 basketball tournament, is a non-perishable food item or $5, which will be donated to SENCA (a list of their current needs will be available on the Chamber website as well as with the entry forms.)

Of course, all of the classic Cobblestone events such as the Firemen’s fishing contest, 5K, frog jumping, little tuggers, classic cars, dodgeball, parade, Little Mr. and Miss Cobblestone, craft show/vendors, carnival rides, and Vespers service (as well as many more) will be going on Aug. 23-25. In order to better prepare for all contests, pre-entry is strongly encouraged and GREATLY appreciated. The entry forms, as well as the complete descriptions, rules, and guidelines for each contest are available at the Chamber/Main Street Office, 1705 Stone St., as well as online at

The Cobblestone parade is just a month away—Saturday, Aug. 24, at ll a.m.

It is time to start planning entries.

The theme is: Falls City: A Community on the rise.

Lori Gottula, perennial parade chairman, issues challenges:

“Show your American pride with your patriotic entry. Let your children ride their bikes through. Highlight your winning softball/baseball team. Blow the audience away with your elaborate float. Groom your horse and show her off. Strike  up the band! No matter what your entry, we want you to participate!”

To register, stop by the Falls City Chamber office and pick up a registration form, or email Lori Gottula at

The parade chairman is hoping for the best parade ever.
