Blue Storm’s DiGiacomo, Dunn combine for eight hits in win over Atchison, KS

Two big innings propelled the Blue Storm Seniors past Atchison, KS Friday night in the first round of the Doniphan County Tourney at Wathena, KS.

Falls City scored four in the top half of the second, then after Atchison cut the lead to 6-4, FC posted a five-spot in the seventh en route to an 11-6 win.

Chaz Dunn went a perfect 4-4 at the plate and reached base all five times for FC with three singles, a double, two runs-batted-in and a run scored. It was the fourth multiple-hit game of the season for Dunn and the first four-hit game of the season by a FC Senior.

Tyler DiGiacomo continued his torrid stretch with a 3-for-5 game against Atchison. DiGiacomo, who is in the midst of a nine-game hitting streak in which he is 17-34 with eight RBIs, recorded his seventh multi-hit game in a row Friday night. With a qualifying minimum of 20 at-bats, DiGiacomo currently leads the team in plate appearances (55), at-bats (46), hits (18), homeruns (1), runs (15), average (.391), slugging (.522) and OPS (on-base plus slugging, .975).

Reese Hogue improved to 3-1 on the bump for the Blue Storm with a complete game, five-hit performance Friday night. Hogue allowed only two earned and struck out seven.

The win Friday advanced FC into Saturday’s championship game against Rock Creek, KS, who defeated hosts Doniphan County in their opening round game, but Saturday’s championship game was stopped in the third inning due to rain and will be made up this Thursday. The game will begin at 6 p.m. in Wathena, KS and both teams have agreed to start the game over and play a full seven-inning game.

The Blue Storm Seniors (8-4 overall, 4-3 conference) host Hiawatha, KS tonight at SNC Field, then travel to Beatrice tomorrow night. As usual, the Senior’s games will follow the Juniors.

FC’s 4-3 conference record currently has them in sixth place with Plattsmouth and Nebraska City occupying the top two seeds heading into next week’s SENBC Tournament. The Blue Storm will host this year’s Seniors tournament and will most likely play Auburn in next Wednesday’s opening round.
